Slimbridge Wetlands centre is a wonderful, 325 hectares of freshwater habitats, full of a whole array of wildlife including otters, beavers, dragonflies, wild orchids and over 200 species of birds. It is open every day from 9.30-5.30pm during the summer, with free guided walks and talks throughout the day, plenty of bird hides, welly boot land play area and a discovery centre.

It's a great place for a family day out and during the summer you can go try to paddle a coracle or go on a canoe safari to look out for water voles. Visit Toad hall to see exotic toads, newts and salamanders or have a go at catching some live animals yourself at the new pond zone.

When you arrive you can also book onto a Land Rover safari with one of the reserve wardens (not available weekends). This will take you along the Severn estuary to see the birds that live on the banks in a covered vehicle. So whatever your interests, make sure you allow several hours to explore these wetlands, there's a restaurant and great play areas for the kids so take your time and enjoy all that Slimbridge has to offer.
